 Bout# 2

Men’s Amateur Super Heavyweight

Anthony Carlson, 1-0-0, Omaha, NE, Mid America Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone
vs
Ron Waschkowski, 0-1-0, Omaha, NE, Mid America Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone

Round 1
Carlson comes across the ring throwing straight jabs and punches to the head of Waschkowski.  Waschkowski answers with looping left and right hooks to the head of Carlson backing Carlson up and forcing him to grab Waschkowski and tie him up.  The action stalled against the ropes so Referee Carl Duncan broke them and re-started them in the middle of the ring.  Carlson again throws straight punches followed by some legs kicks.  Waschkowski again answers with the looping punches to Carlson’s head.  Carlson wraps his arms around Waschkowski’s head, turns him into the ropes and throws several punches and knees to Waschkowski’s body as the bell ended the round.

Round 2
As the round began, Carlson threw a stiff left jab to the face of Waschkowski that snapped his head back.  Carlson then followed with a flurry of punches that forced Waschkowski to cover up and turn away forcing Referee Carl Duncan to step in and issue Waschkowski a standing 8 count.  As the fight resumed, Carlson came after Waschkowski with the straight punches and backed him into the corner where he added knees to the attack to Waschkowski’s body along with the punches.  When Waschkowski was unable to fight back, the referee stepped in to issue Waschkowski a second standing 8 count.  Carlson continued the onslaught against Waschkowski and again backed him to the ropes where Waschkowski was still unable to defend himself forcing Referee Carl Duncan to stop the fight at 1:49 of the round due to the 3 knockdown rule.

Winner by TKO—Anthony Carlson

Bout# 3

Men’s Amateur Super Middleweight

Matt Williams, 1-0-0, Omaha, NE, Hough House Basement Brawlers, Scott Hough
vs
Conlin Gaffney, 0-1-0, Minneapolis, MN, Minnesota Martial Arts, Academy, John Collins

Round 1
Gaffney, the taller of the two fighters, began with kicks to the legs and body of Williams using his kicks to keep Williams at a safe distance not allowing Williams to get close enough to strike Gaffney.  Eventually, Gaffney threw a round kick to Williams’ body that was partially blocked and allowed Williams to jump in and tie Gaffney up in a clinch.  Gaffney throws Williams off and begins kicking Williams as he did at the beginning of the round.  Williams throws a spinning backfist that catches Gaffney off guard and allows Williams to close the distance and again get Gaffney in a clinch.  Gaffney throws a series of knees to Williams’ body but one catches Williams low and causes Referee Carl Duncan to step in and stop time to allow Williams time to recover.  When the fight resumed, Williams charges in with kicks and punches causing Gaffney to clinch and throw an occasional knee as the round ended.  The edge in the round went to Gaffney on all judges scorecards.

Round 2
As the round begins, Williams rushes at Gaffney with a flurry of punches and lands a right hook to Gaffney’s head which stunned him and caused Referee Carl Duncan to issue Gaffney a standing 8 count.  Williams continues the attack as the fight resumes and forces Gaffney to grab him and tie him up to stall the attack.  In the clinch, Gaffney throws several knees to the body with another hitting Williams low causing time to stop to again allow recovery time for Williams.  As the fight continues, Williams attacks Gaffney with another flurry of punches, hitting Gaffney in the head and putting him down earning Gaffney another standing 8 count.  When the fight continues, Williams charged Gaffney who was unable to defend himself causing Referee Carl Duncan to step in and stop the fight at 1:33 of the round due to the 3 knockdown rule.

Winner by TKO—Matt Williams

Bout# 4

Men’s Amateur Cruiserweight

Jason Minor, 0-1-0, Bellevue, NE, Mid America Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone
vs
Christopher Mitchell, 1-0-0, Wichita, KS, Janjira Muay Thai Kansas, Andy Zerger

Round 1
Mitchell comes across the ring throwing round kicks to the body and punches to the head.  Minor threw some punches of his own but Mitchell walks threw them and continues his attack with a left/right combination to Minor’s head.  They clinch, roll around on the ropes, break themselves up and move back to the middle of the ring and exchange blows.  Both fighters trying to get a feel for the other as the round ends with neither having a clear advantage in the round.  All judges gave the slight edge in the round to Mitchell.

Round 2
Both fighters begin cautiously exchanging blows.  Minor attempting to throw more leg and body kicks in an effort to open Mitchell up.  Minor then attempts a “Superman” punch to Mitchell’s head but has little effect.  Minor continues with the kicks to Mitchell’s legs putting Mitchell down with a flash knockdown.  Mitchell jumps back up and appeared unphased.  They clinch, exchange knees but Mitchell throws a low one stopping time to allow Minor a chance to recover.  As the round ends, Mitchell threw a kick at Minor that Minor sidestepped and was able to hit Mitchell with a kick of his own as the bell closed the round.

Round 3
The fighters, sensing a close fight, came at each other exchanging blows.  Minor attempts a power punch which Mitchell ducked under and answered with a strong shot of his own.  Minor continues with leg kicks but Mitchell answers with stronger punches which caused Minor to turn away earning him a standing 8 count from Referee Carl Duncan.  As the fight continues, Mitchell keeps coming forward as Minor tries to keep him off.  Mitchell works Minor into the corner and throws a reverse sidekick into Minor’s body followed by punches to the head and body putting Minor down and forcing Referee Carl Duncan to step in and stop the fight at 1:47 of the round.

Winner by TKO—Chris Mitchell

Bout# 5

Men’s Amateur Super Middleweight

Jeffrey Ogg, 0-1-0, Omaha, NE, Mid America Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone
vs
Mike Hough, 1-0-0, Ogallala, NE, Hough House Basement Brawlers, Scott Hough

Round 1
The fighters exchange punches to begin the fight.  Hough comes at Ogg with left/right combinations to Ogg’s head and then moves in and ties Ogg up and begins throwing knees to Ogg’s body.  In the clinch, Ogg seems satisfied to just throw punches while Hough uses knees.  They break each other up and continue exchanging blows.  Hough threw a round kick to Ogg’s head causing Ogg to step in and tie Hough up.  Hough pushes Ogg up against the ropes and throws several knees to Ogg’s body.  They break themselves up again allowing Hough to throw another round kick to Ogg’s head but it was partially blocked.  Hough then tries to kick Ogg in the body but Ogg catches the leg and dumps Hough to the ground.  Hough quickly stands up and Ogg attacks with wild looping punches at Hough’s head and body.  Hough ties Ogg up and again starts with knees to Ogg’s body.  The action stalls so Referee Terri Storm breaks them and brings them to the center where Hough again kicks Ogg in the head and follows it up with a punch to the head causing Ogg to clinch as the round ends.  All judges gave the edge in the round to Hough.

Round 2
Hough starts with left/right combinations to Ogg’s head.  Ogg turns away so Hough grabs him and starts with the knees to the body.  They stall up against the ropes and are broken up by Referee Terri Storm.  Hough throws another kick to Ogg’s head but Ogg walked through it and hit Hough with punches that backed Hough up.  They begin showing fatigue as they exchanged kicks and punches throughout the whole round.  Neither fighter appeared to be the dominant fighter in a close round.  Two judges gave the edge in the round to Hough and one gave Ogg the edge.

Round 3
Both fighters appear weary as they throw wide looping punches at each other.  Hough moves in and ties Ogg up and starts throwing knees to Ogg’s body.  In the clinch, Ogg again appears to want to only throw punches where Hough utilizes the knees to the body.  Ogg pushes Hough away but Hough jumps in and begins with the knees again.  Both fighters appear to be using each other to hold themselves up due to the fatigue factor each was feeling.  Possibly sensing the end of the fight being near, Hough steps back and throws a final round kick at Ogg’s head seconds before the bell rings to end the final round.  The judges scored the fight 30-27, 29-28 and 30-27.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Mike Hough

Women’s Amateur Lightweight

Melina Caniglia, 1-1-0, Omaha, NE, Mid America Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone
vs
Marissa Biggerstaff, 0-1-0, Pleasant Hill, IA, Round Kick Gym, Pete Peterson

Round 1
Caniglia, the shorter of the two fighters, starts the fight with a left kick to the body followed by a punch to the head of Biggerstaff snapping back her head and causing her to try to hold Caniglia in order to stall the attack.  Caniglia throws her off and again goes with the kick to the body, right hook to the head.  Biggerstaff threw punches back at Caniglia but Caniglia ignored them and moved forward.  She backs Biggerstaff against the ropes and throws several unanswered punches to Biggerstaff’s head forcing Referee Terri Storm to step in and issue a standing 8 count to Biggerstaff.  As the fight continues, Caniglia again uses the left round kick to the body, right hook to the head and backed Biggerstaff across the ring as the round ended.

Round 2
Caniglia comes forward and continues with the kick/punch combination that worked so well for her in the first round.  Biggerstaff attempts to keep her off with kicks but Caniglia walks through her kicks and continues to snap Biggerstaff’s head with her punches.  The round was dominated by the smaller Caniglia.

Round 3
Biggerstaff begins with kicks and punches in an attempt to take early control of the round but Caniglia would not be backed up.  She moves forward focusing less on the body and more on the head of Biggerstaff.  As the round ends, Caniglia was backing Biggerstaff across the ring.  All judges scored the fight 30-26.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Melina Caniglia

Her aggressiveness and tenacity in the victory earned  Melina Caniglia the honor of being voted
“Outstanding Fighter of the Night”

Bout# 7

Men’s Amateur Super Middleweight

Nicholas Almazan, 2-0-0, Omaha, NE, Mid America Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone
vs
Lonny Liss, 0-1-0, Richfield, MN, Minnesota Martial Arts Academy, John Kalenze

Round 1
Almazan comes across and throws a couple of lazy punches and Liss responds with punches and kicks.  Liss moves in and ties Almazan up and throws Almazan down to the ground.  Almazan gets up and moves into a clinch with Liss.  Both fighters exchange knees to each others legs and body as they roll around on the ropes.  Almazan appeared to want to kick and punch during the round but Liss appeared to want to clinch and fight from the inside.  When he would clinch, Almazan let him and tried to fight inside.  All judges believed Liss was the more effective inside fighter by giving him the edge in the round.

Round 2
The round starts with Almazan throwing punches and kicks in an attempt to avoid the clinch while Liss appeared to be reaching in for the clinch to begin working the knees to Almazan’s body.  Throughout the round, Almazan appeared more comfortable fighting from a distance while Liss preferred the inside.  It was a better round for Almazan with two judges giving him the edge while the third gave Liss the round.

Round 3
Almazan seemed to have figured out Liss’ game plan this round because he would not allow Liss to clinch and work his knees from the inside.  Almazan threw kicks and punches as Liss reached in for the clinch.  Instead of fighting Liss in the clinch, Almazan would push away and make Liss fight him from the outside.  Tactically, it was a much better round for Almazan as he had Liss covering up and trying to defend the kicks and punches from a distance.  All judges gave the edge to Almazan in the last round.  The judges scored the fight 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28.

Winner by Split Decision—Nick Almazan

Bout# 8

Men’s Amateur Super Welterweight

Joel Mickells, 2-0-0, La Vista, NE, Mid America Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone
vs
Dustin Blake, 1-1-0, Wichita, KS, Janjira Muay Thai Kansas, Andy Zerger

Round 1
Mickells, the taller of the two fighters, used his longer arms and legs to strike Blake from the outside.  Blake tried to close the distance and get in some single shots but was mostly kept away by the reach advantage of Mickells.  Blake, stronger, appeared to be patient waiting for an opening.  Mickells threw a kick that is caught by Blake.  Blake kicked the supporting leg out and put Mickells down.  Mickells gots up and again used his reach to keep Blake away.  Throughout the round, Mickells was the busier of the two.  Blake was able to block many of Mickells strikes but was able to land only a few of his own.  All judges gave the edge to Mickells in the round.

Round 2
Blake begins with leg kick which is answered by a round kick from Mickells to Blake’s head followed up with a kick to Blake’s body that is caught by Blake.  Mickells was too close to the rope so Blake dropped the leg and they moved into a clinch where Mickells proceeded to hit Blake with knees to the body.  Mickells headgear became twisted so he pushed out of the clinch to get it fixed.  When the fight continued, Blake threw a strong leg kick but Mickells works through it and starts kicking and punching Blake’s body.  Again in the round, Mickells was the busier of the two fighters.  Not really doing much damage to Blake but effective enough to prevent Blake from landing anything against him.  All judges gave Mickells the edge in the round.

Round 3
Mickells attacked Blake and Blake blocked much of the attack.  Blake caught Mickells leg on two separate occasions in the round and kicked his supporting leg out to put him down but was unable to get to Mickells between the catches.  Mickells won the round for being the busier of the two fighters.  All judges scored the fight 30-27.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Joel Mickells

Bout# 9

Men’s Amateur Middleweight
Thai Boxing Association—Sanctioning Authority
Amateur Middleweight Title

Andrew Dober, 3-1-0, Omaha, NE, Mid America Martial Arts, Kurt Podany
vs
Ryan Clark, 5-3-0, Norwalk, IA, Round Kick Gym, Pete Peterson

Round 1
Both fighters come out throwing bombs at each other. Dober threw a front kick to Clark’s body followed by a right hook to the head.  Clark threw a couple of quick jabs toward Dober’s head which Dober ducked under and hit Clark with two hard shots to the body before pulling out.  Clark blocked two strong kicks toward his head and then attempted a “Superman” punch which Dober evaded.  Dober threw two inside leg kicks to Clark’s front leg.  Clark used a front kick to Dober’s body to keep Dober away and counter some of the power that Dober was showing in his shots to Clark’s head and body.  A lot of non-stop action from both fighters but the round ended with all judges giving the round to Dober.

Round 2
Clark opened with a round kick to Dober’s head.  Dober tried to answer with one of his own but Clark blocked it and threw a round kick to Dober’s stomach.  Clark appears to be beating Dober to the punch this round which possibly kept Dober off balance.  They exchange power shots to each others head but Clark appeared to get the best in the exchange.  A better round for Clark as all judges gave him the round.

Round 3
Clark threw the first looping punch at the head of Dober but Dober saw it coming and backed away from it.  Clark followed up with a front kick as Dober threw a punch to Clark’s head.  Both landed but the front kick took some of the power out of the punch.  Clark used leg kicks to stall Dober’s attack but Dober answered with kicks of his own.  Clark appeared to be working on Dober’s head and body while Dober appeared to be working Clark’s head or body.  Dober is determined to move forward and punish Clark.  Clark looks to be keeping Dober outside with kicks.  The round ends with both fighters throwing powerful punches at the others’ head.  In a very close round, the judges gave the edge to Dober.

Round 4
Clark landed a round kick to Dober’s head and a punch to the body followed by a kick to the body.  Dober stepped back and  threw a strong round kick to Clark’s face that dropped Clark forcing Referee Mike Storm to give Clark a standing 8 count.  Dober came after Clark with a vicious attack.  Clark was against the ropes, he threw a few punches while trying to fight back in order to stay in the fight.  He was bobbing and weaving, trying to clear his head and stay out of the way of Dober’s onslaught.  At 1:32 of the round, Referee Mike Storm  stepped in and stopped the fight when Dr. Bill Gossman called an end to the fight by throwing a towel in the ring.

Winner by TKO—Andrew Dober
Thai Boxing Association—Sanctioning Authority
Amateur Middleweight Champion

Bout# 10

Men’s Professional Super Heavyweight

Scott Hough, 0-1-0, Omaha, NE, Hough House Basement Brawlers, Self
vs
Johnny McKibben, 1-0-0, Augusta, KS, Janjira Muay Thai Kansas, Andy Zerger

Round 1
Hough starts with a leg kick to McKibben’s legs and knocking him to the canvass.  McKibben gets up and grabs Hough in a clinch so Hough throws knees to the body.  McKibben pushes him away and tries a kick to Hough’s body but Hough was quicker and kicks McKibben’s supporting leg out and again knocks McKibben down.  McKibben gets up again and throws a wild punch that takes him off-balance causing him to slip and put a knee down just as Hough is about to hit him in the head.  Hough holds back from committing the illegal punch while his opponent was down.  Hough backs McKibben to the ropes and knees him to the body several times.  Hough steps back and McKibben tries a reverse sidekick that Hough sidesteps and follows up with a powerful punch to McKibben’s head that puts him down.  McKibben was slow getting up forcing Referee Mike Storm to issue him a standing 8 count.  Hough moves in and tries to knee McKibben in the head but McKibben blocks them.  McKibben throws a wild punch that catches Hough and bloodies Hough nose as the bell rings to end the round.  Hough earned the edge in the round for the 8 count to McKibben.

Round 2
McKibben attempts another reverse sidekick that misses but Hough failed to take advantage of it.  McKibben is throwing punches that are now connecting.  Hough appearing tired, allows McKibben to clinch and throw a couple of knees to his head.  McKibben having a better round lands several punches to the head and body of Hough.  Hough bends over and takes a knee to the head.  Slow getting up, Hough receives a 9 count from Referee Mike Storm.  Indicating that he wants to continue, Hough moves forward and takes a series of hooks and straight punches that put him down again.  This time Referee Mike Storm counted to 10 and ended the fight at 2:00 of the round.

Winner by Knockout—Johnny McKibben
